Event Description:

As part of the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) in Boulder, the University of Bergen (UiB), NORCE, the Research Council of Norway (RCN), The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) is hosting a workshop with the aim to strengthen collaboration in Arctic climate research.

In addition to discussing bilateral collaboration, we will offer a critical review of current interdisciplinary research in Arctic climate change, including the alarming trends and potential large-scale impacts of Arctic sea ice loss and Greenland ice sheet melting.

Main themes:

  • The Science of Arctic Climate Change: understanding the fundamental changes occurring in the Arctic and addressing the potential for abrupt and severe disruptions.
  • The People of the Arctic: highlighting the consequences of climate change for indigenous communities and the importance of inclusivity in Arctic climate science.
  • Bilateral collaboration in the Arctic: showcasing successful joint research initiatives and exploring new collateral funding opportunities.
  • By bringing together leading experts and stakeholders, the workshop aims to strengthen international cooperation in Arctic research by identifying thematic areas of future collaboration between Norway and USA in Arctic research.

Solicited speakers (10min short presentations followed by discussion, each session ca. 60min):

The Science of Arctic Climate Change

  • Amanda Lynch (Brown University) -  “Converging pressures, diverging trajectories”
  • Fiamma Straneo (Harvard University) - “GRISO - Greenland Ice Sheet Ocean Interactions”

The People of the Arctic

  • Twila Moon (National Snow and Data Center) – “Community impacts and community collaboration: moving research forward together”
  • Kerim Hestnes Nisancioglu (University of Bergen/Bjerknes Center for Climate Research) - “Bridging the gap between scientific understanding and local knowledge”

Bilateral collaboration in the Arctic

  • Jennifer Mercer (National Science Foundation)
  • Jon Fuglestad (Research Council of Norway)
