Open Session - HYBRID
Room: Glen Miller Ballroom in UMC - 210
Organiser: Katharine Duderstadt (USA)
Event Description:
This workshop is hosted by faculty and students from three Arctic-themed Graduate Research Traineeship Programs (NRT) supported by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) program. These NRTs include Convergence Arctic Research Perspectives and Education (CARPE NRT, PI Ruth Varner) at the University of New Hampshire, Systems Approaches to Understanding and Navigating the New Arctic (SAUNNA, PI Jasmine Saros) at the University of Maine Orono, and Tamamta (“All of Us,” PI Courtney Carothers) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The goal of the meeting is to share successful strategies for enhancing graduate education though innovative and evidence-based traineeship models aligned with the changing workforce and research needs in the Arctic. Discussion topics include promoting interdisciplinary or convergence research projects that address complex societal concerns; training methods to enhance communication, ethics, and teamwork skills; recruitment and retention approaches for broadening participation; group field experiences and field safety protocols; working alongside Indigenous communities in academic research; and promoting community engagement and co-production of knowledge. Presentations providing examples of faculty courses, workshops, and student projects from the NRTs will promote deeper discussion.
