24 March 2025 | 08:30 - 17:00 (MST)

Closed Session / By Invitation Only - HYBRID

Room:  UMC Fourth Floor - 425

Organiser: Hanne Sagen (NERSC, Norway)

Event Description:

The workshop will discuss the status and further plans for the two collaborating projects, the EU-funded HiAOOS and the ONR funded HIATTS. The projects have successfully installed a large-scale mooring network in the Nansen and Amundsen Basin in August/September 2024. Each mooring is equipped with forty oceanographic and acoustic instruments to measure temperature, salinity, pressure, currents, sea ice drift and draft, and ocean sound. The moorings will operate for two years until 2026. This is the first research infrastructure of its kind in the central Arctic and will provide unique new data from a region which is poorly explored. The workshop will discuss the results and data from the previous Coordinated Arctic Acoustic Thermometry Experiment (CAATEX) where transpolar acoustic propagation studies were conducted based on data from the year-long experiment in 2019-2020. The workshop will discuss methods and tools for analysing oceanographic and acoustic data for use in acoustic thermometry, underwater geopositioning of AUVs, floats and gliders, detection of earthquakes, and in studies of marine mammals. In the plans for further development of the moorings topics such as data downloading from the instruments on the mooring using AUVs or winch system will be discussed. The workshop will outline plans for further development of the observing system and tools for exploitation of the data towards IPY 2032-33.
