Event Description:
The Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS), a coordinated multi-ship and multi-nation pan-Arctic program, was implemented during late summer and fall of 2020-2022 with more than 25 cruises from 11 different nations to obtain a comprehensive view of hydrographic, carbon cycle, and ecosystem changes occurring in the Arctic Ocean. Following the completion of the field observation campaign, the SAS project entered the synthesis phase which involves combining the data to create pan-Arctic baseline datasets and producing synthesis papers based on analyses of the datasets. The SAS project is further planning for a second ship-based sampling campaign (SAS II) around 2030. This meeting will provide an overview of the current status of the SAS synthesis, and discuss the accomplishment of the SAS Science Plan and how the SAS II Science Plan should be developed based on the SAS achievements. Furthermore, how to expand the SAS II project toward the 5th International Polar Year (IPY) 2032–33, collaborations with other projects, and engaging young researchers will be discussed.
