Open Session - ON-SITE ONLY

Room: CASE Building - E351

Event Description:

During the IASC FOX workshop (June 5–7, 2024), we developed interdisciplinary research themes based on the ICARP IV Research Priority Teams (RPTs). A key issue identified was the need for guidance on collaborative and cross-disciplinary research proposal writing. This workshop is designed to address the challenges and barriers researchers face in developing research proposals and securing grants, particularly in interdisciplinary contexts.

To set the stage, the expert (Dr Kelly Redeker, Senior Lecturer, York University, UK) will begin by discussing the distinctions between interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research, as each presents unique challenges. Drawing from his experience, he will highlight how his work has evolved into the transdisciplinary space, particularly in the tropics (Southeast Asia and Brazil), where they have secured several funded bids as a Co-Investigator. Additionally, Dr Redeker will provide insights from his experience as a member of grant panels, highlighting common mistakes researchers make when presenting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary proposals.

Participants are encouraged to come prepared to share their ideas, suggestions, and experiences, including knowns, unknowns, challenges as well as potential solutions (to the challenges) that they have encountered in their research. This collaborative discussion will help identify common hurdles and potential partnerships within the group.

At the end of the session, the participants will be given the opportunity to brainstorm and identify cross-cutting themes and present an outline of their potential research proposals. The goal is to provide valuable insights and practical guidance to enhance proposal writing skills, have an expert answer your questions, ultimately strengthening your ability to secure funding and contribute to Arctic research priorities over the next decade.
