Open Session - ON SITE ONLY
Room: Mødelokale 1.1
Organiser: Seira Duncan (University of Eastern Finland)
Session Description:
This workshop aims to broaden IASC’s geographic scope by spotlighting nonpolar cryospheric regions in Asia, specifically Mongolian and Scottish reindeer herding communities, that have historically received less attention. Building on IASC’s previous engagements with cryospheric change in Mongolia (e.g. ASSW 2025 in Colorado and IASC’s 2019 Permafrost and Pastoral Land Use in Mongolia report) and Scotland (e.g. ASSW 2024 in Edinburgh and the Scottish Arctic Network), this workshop brings together Mongolian and Scottish community members and international researchers who will discuss reindeer herding and how to manage herd health amidst changing cryospheres to increase IASC members’ awareness of communities outside the traditionally Arctic-focused cryosphere. Participants will have the opportunity to not only learn more about the Dukha/Tsataan and Scottish Highland communities but also consider connections between Arctic and non-Arctic reindeer herding peoples and how to best facilitate ties and knowledge sharing between them.
