Session Description:

Climate change is occurring faster in the Arctic than in any other region, with tremendous consequences for Arctic biodiversity and the communities that depend on its natural resources. Changes in climate and biodiversity can undermine established production patterns of fishing, hunting, gathering and herding by Arctic communities, negatively influencing their welfare and wellbeing. The management of the Arctic environment sparks intense dialogue between different interest groups and communities over land and resource use. There is an acute need for further dialogue. Moreover, in many regions, the changing security situation and the increasing demand for energy and other resources have severe consequences. This leads to new requirements for planning and decision-making based on scientific and economic data, assessments, and predictions. A prerequisite for good planning is access to data and information of relevance to people living and working in the Arctic. This requires that Indigenous Communities and local communities become actively involved in decision-making on environmental management. At this meeting, we will brainstorm about how to better understand the ways that participatory approaches and environmental monitoring can inform municipal and national environmental management planning and decision-making, and the use Swedish Polar Research SecretariatSwedish Polar Research Secretariatof locally generated knowledge in these practices.
