Session Description:

The Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS) is a grassroots, researcher-driven international effort to collect pan-Arctic empirical data that first took place in 2020-2022. About 15 scientific cruises from 10 different countries were organized as part of the program. Together they generated baseline data throughout the Arctic Ocean focusing on water masses and circulation, ecosystem responses, and carbon cycling. The SAS intends to continue as a decadal effort of international scientific collaboration to closely document the transitioning Arctic system through sustained observations and provide the often-missing pan-Arctic perspective. Towards this effort, Early Career Researchers (ECRs) are organizing an ECR-led research and training cruise as a pilot program for the next SAS field campaign planned for ~2030. The SAS ECR is hosting a 2-day workshop to identify science and training goals for the research cruise. Workshop activities will include presentations, thematic breakout groups, discussions, and writing with the goal of preparing a white paper and proposal outline. We invite physical and biological oceanographers, atmosphere- and cryosphere-focused ECRs that use observational data and/or modeling in their work, as well as Indigenous scholars to contribute to this initiative.
