Session Description:

This workshop showcases the technology, methods, and immersive visualizations created during a four-year project (2022-26) that examined the impact of permafrost thaw on community infrastructure in rural Alaska. Using AR/VR/180/360 camera equipment, aerial and terrestrial LiDAR sensors, and photogrammetry, our research team created immersive visualizations using Web3D, LiDAR 360, Blender, and other visualization platforms to illustrate changes in and challenges to infrastructure conditions on cultural sites, roads, buildings and other core sites in Utqiagvik, Point Lay, Central, Nome and Bethel, Alaska. The visualizations we created are tied to data platforms and research databases, enabling users to retrieve textual and numerical data within immersive 3D environments. Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to try out VR headsets for virtual community and site "walkthroughs" and interact with Arctic Science datasets tied to these locations. We will also showcase the portable image capture technology utilized in this project and share technical notes for future use on other projects.
