Open Session - HYBRID

Room: Mødelokale 2.2

Organiser: Danish Red Cross, Canadian Red Cross, and Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, Denmark

Session Description:

How can science integrate and consider a community-centered approach to address health in the Arctic? As the Arctic warms three to four times faster than the global average, the region is extremely exposed to effects of climatic changes. People living in the Arctic experience these impacts first-hand, with potentially profound consequences for their physical and mental health.

This session, organized by Danish Red Cross, Canadian Red Cross, and Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, will explore the humanitarian implications of different climatic futures in the Arctic with a focus on health. Using the storylines approach, developed by the Climate Centre and grounded in academic research on disaster forensics and climate risk, the aim of the session will be to examine how health resilience can be strengthened for people living in the Arctic. This will be done through the exploration of Red Cross health initiatives in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, while also highlighting how Indigenous traditional knowledge can be integrated with scientific approaches to foster a more holistic understanding of health.

Building on these insights, participants will co-develop impact pathways for action, and the session will conclude with recommendations for scientists and decision-makers on supporting the health and resilience of people living in the Arctic, moving beyond problem descriptions toward actionable, more human-centered solutions.
