Session Description:
The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program Expert Group on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Chemicals of Emerging Arctic Concern (CEACs) is preparing an assessment of temporal trends of these contaminants in the Arctic. The main objective of this assessment is to update and expand on the previous AMAP assessment which covered time series to 2014. The assessment aims to compile all the information that is available on time trends of concentrations of POPs and CEACs in Arctic biota, air, water, ice and sediment cores. Trends in different media, and at different locations in the Arctic, will be compared to improve our understanding of the environmental fate POPs and CEACs, and the effectiveness of global and regional bans or restrictions on them. The influences of climate change on the long-term trends of POPs and CEACs will also be investigated. Work on the assessment has been underway since early 2025 led by a core group of about 20 scientists from circumpolar countries, who are preparing chapters on major groups of POPs and CEACs. The one day in person and online workshop at ASSW, combined with the Arctic Science day and AOS, will provide an opportunity to make progress on the assessment while also enabling participants to become better informed about other ongoing Arctic research and monitoring which could prove valuable for interpreting the trend data and developing future collaborations.
