Open Session - HYBRID
Room: Mogens Zielerstuen
Organiser: Jon Børre Ørbæk (Research Council of Norway, Norway); co-organised with SIOS (Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System) and the Norwegian Polar Institute
Session Description:
This workshop is set up for the research community in Svalbard and beyond to share information on coordination activities and roles highlighting Svalbard as a research platform towards IPY5. Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System has a central position in building a community around observations in Svalbard. The Svalbard Research Office is established by the Norwegian Government to follow up on the research strategy for Svalbard, provide core coordination and support all research activities in Svalbard, staffed by personnel from the Norwegian Polar Institute and the Research Council of Norway. Svalbard research is expected to set up coordinated research initiatives towards the IPY5, addressing the priorities identified under the ICARP IV process to be published at the ASSW. Preparations have started in Norway to establish a national IPY5-secretariat at the Research Council of Norway from January 2026 with an IPY5-committee led by the Norwegian Polar Institute. This workshop therefore aims to discuss how Svalbard research can implement the priorities of ICARP IV, what the ambitions towards IPY5 are, and which coordination roles and initiatives relevant for the international research community exist. The session will feature presentations from SIOS (observations), SRO (coordination), RCN (IPY5-secretariat), NPI (Ny-Ålesund flagships), and other relevant projects. There will be space for open discussion and bottom-up ideas.
