Open Session - HYBRID

Room: Mødelokale 2

Organiser: Christina Goethel (University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and St. Mary's College of Maryland, USA)

Session Description:

The Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO) framework was developed as a “detection array” to document ecosystem responses in biological hotspots to changes in ongoing environmental conditions, using standardized methods to measure the physical, chemical, and biological systems. Beginning in the Pacific Arctic region in 2010, the DBO framework and concept has been expanded into the Atlantic Arctic, Baffin Bay/Davis Strait, and the East Siberian Sea, creating a pan-Arctic network of DBOs. This international initiative builds on the active involvement of scientists in long-term, multi-disciplinary, regional efforts with the goal of improving our understanding of the processes impacting the marine ecosystem in a time of rapid change. Findings are shared with both the scientific community and northern communities to ensure accessibility and mutual benefit. Co-development of community-based monitoring programs is also an important component of DBO data collection.

Since 2022, the pan-Arctic network of DBOs has been meeting annually at ASSW, which has provided a forum for exchange of scientific results, improving organizational networks, and discussions on how to strengthen connections among these parallel observing programs that collect valuable data on the ongoing and propagating observed changes in Arctic marine ecosystem and environmental conditions as a whole. We invite participants at ASSW to a full-day workshop of the pan-Arctic DBO community during which we will share results from recent field seasons in each sector and host afternoon discussions on common priorities, opportunities for future sampling activities, co-production with local communities, early career involvement, sustaining of these observing networks through time, and how to continue to connect these parallel observing programs situated throughout the Arctic.

Meeting Organizers:

Pacific Arctic DBO: Christina Goethel*, Jacqueline Grebmeier and Lee Cooper
Siberian DBO: Igor Polyakov, Laura Whitmore, Eun Jin Yang, and Jinyoung Jung
Atlantic Arctic DBO: Marit Reigstad, Arild Sundfjord
Baffin Bay/Davis Strait DBO: Craig Lee and Kumiko Azetsu-Scott
