Session Description

As part of the implementation of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS), the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO has solicited the submission of proposals for “Decade Actions” that promote, coordinate, and report on progress during the Decade. With respect to the Arctic, the first steps were the development of a community-driven Arctic Action Plan which was published and endorsed in 2021. With the encouragement of the IOC, a follow-up initiative has been undertaken to develop an Arctic Regional Programme Office. This office would function to help coordinate among approved Decade Actions in the Arctic, as well as to implement many of the goals of the Arctic Action Plan. An initial draft of this proposal was submitted on August, 31, 2022, with support provided by the IASC Marine Working Group. This round table discussion, to be hosted at ASSW 2023, is designed to provide the broader Arctic community with updates about the initiative including: details on the submission, feedback that is available, alignment of the initiative with the ICARP and IASC science planning process since the submission, and it will also be a forum for questions to be posed and to encourage dialogue among interested stakeholders.
