The Story of Elvel is a window into the world of Itelmen People. Coming from the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in Kamchatka, the story of Elvel serves as a rich guiding database of Indigenous knowledge to understand the threads that formed a strong connection of Itelmens with the land and water. This film is a result of a multi-year community-led project that is aimed at bringing the story to a new life and support revitalization of Itelmen language. We bring diverse ways of storytelling (puppetry, shadow theatre, talking circle, counter mapping, film) as an example of holistic approach where language, land, culture, and people coincide together and are inseparable.

Join us after the viewing for Itelmen dance and a conversation and question and answer with community residents and individuals connected to the film and storytelling efforts.
