Open Session - HYBRID

Room: Mødelokale 2.3

Organiser: Sophie Weeks (Polar Educators International, Scott Polar Research Institute, UK)

Session Description:

The polar regions are experiencing unprecedented change, with ripple effects on ecosystems, societies, and global climate systems. While research has generated a wealth of knowledge, the challenge remains: how do we move from understanding to action? This interactive workshop, hosted by Polar Educators International and partners, focuses on translating polar science and Indigenous/local knowledge into a framework for concrete educational strategies and community resilience initiatives.

Participants will engage in hands-on activities to:

  • Explore cases and experiences of successful knowledge-to-action projects from the Arctic (and if applicable, connections to the Antarctic or the Himalayan “Third Pole.)
  • Work in small groups to design prototype educational and communication tools, outreach programs, or community partnerships that connect polar knowledge with real-world action.
  • Identify opportunities to align these initiatives with global frameworks such as the UN Decade of action for Cryospheric Sciences, UN Ocean Decade, UN Decade for Indigenous Languages and the lead-up to the International Polar Year 2032–33.

The workshop will emphasize intercultural learning, intergenerational collaboration, and the integration of Indigenous knowledge alongside scientific research. Participants will leave with practical outputs, including adaptable frameworks and draft action plans, collaborative ideas, and a shared resource kit to continue developing beyond the event.

By bridging research, education, and community needs, this workshop aims to empower participants to become active facilitators of polar education knowledge-to-action pathways that foster sustainable and resilient futures engage local people.
